Rumor: Delayed Retina iPad mini launch blamed on LCD burn
A rumor out of the Far East claims issues relating to burn-in on Sharp-made LCD panels is holding up Apple's release of the iPad mini with Retina display, supposedly prompting the company to seek help from Samsung.
Citing an industry source, Korean language publication ETNews claims Apple partner manufacturer Sharp is having problems with its advanced IGZO display technology, causing low yield rates for Retina panels bound for the second-generation iPad mini. This unforeseen setback is purportedly slowing down the production process substantially, leading Apple to look elsewhere for additional supply.
Supposedly at fault are malfunctions relating to Sharp's thin-film transistor, or TFT, implementation, which is causing burn-in on an unknown percentage of produced displays. The Japanese firm is said to be employing low-power IGZO display technology, so named because it uses semiconductor material indium gallium zinc oxide for the LCD's TFT backplane.
The source went on to say that although Sharp's LCD burn-in is not visible to the naked eye, the panels cannot be used due to Apple's strict Retina display standards.
While Sharp is thought to be Apple's secondary Retina display supplier for the new mini, the company is reportedly responsible for 40 percent of all orders, with LG taking the remaining 60 percent. According to the report, LG is using a different, more common substrate called amorphous silicon, or a-Si, for its TFTs.
Apple may be looking to Samsung for display supply for the Retina mini starting in 2014, as the Korean tech giant's low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology is not affected by the burn-in issue, the source said.
Thursday's rumor echoes a report from last week, which also claimed Apple was eyeing a Samsung deal due to Sharp's panel yield issues. That account, however, added that LG is also experiencing problems with its version of the high-resolution screen, quoting a DisplaySearch analyst as saying the display maker was 'not close to full production.'
Apple announced the iPad mini with Retina display in October alongside the recently-released iPad Air. The full-size tablet started shipping last week, but Apple has yet to disclose a sell-by date for the mini, but promises the tablet will hit store shelves in November.

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Sporting Kansas City and the Houston Dynamo battled to a tense scoreless draw in the first leg of the Eastern Conference championship on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The Dynamo entered their third straight conference finals after shocking the New York Red Bulls in the semifinals looking to grab the initiative in the series, but struggled to generate quality scoring chances over the first 45 minutes of play.
Houston's best opportunity came late in the half when forward Will Bruin came charging down the field and decided to have a strike on goal from about 40 yards out that just grazed the crossbar on its way into the stands.
Sporting didn't fare much better over the duration of the match after outlasting New England on Wednesday in the semifinals. The visitors best opportunity came in the 65th minute as defender Aurelien Collin got free for a header on goal off a corner kick, but it went just over the bar.
Both teams kept pushing for the goal that would have made the difference as the fourth official's board showed a staggering seven minutes of stoppage time. But players from both sides were running on tired legs and the clubs settled for a scoreless draw.
The sides will have it all to play for in the second leg when the tie resumes at Sporting Park on Nov. 23.

D'Antoni plans to sit Nash against Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni says he has no plans to play point guard Steve Nash in Friday night's game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Lakers are trying to be cautious about overworking the 39-year-old point guard, who is in his 18th season.
The Lakers played in Houston on Thursday night and did not get to New Orleans until 3 a.m. Friday. When the Lakers played on back-to-back nights earlier this season, Nash sat out the second of those games as well.
Nash played about 28 minutes in Houston, finishing with 12 points and six assists.
D'Antoni says the Lakers hope to avoid any setbacks with Nash, who was sidelined much of last season with broken leg as well as hip and hamstring injuries.

Charlie Sheen custody battle latest: Restricting order, gagging clauses and threats
A temporary restraining order has been issued against Charlie after he threated Brooke on Twitter
A judge has warned Charlie Sheen to stay away from his ex-wfe - or face jail.
As well as being barred from seeing Brooke, the judge reinstated a gagging order, banning him from talking about the case - after he Two And A Half Men actor tweeted Brooke a picture of a cake with a grenade in it.
Ironically it was a tweet about Brooke losing her battle to keep her ex husband away from her.
Mueller, 36, who said she is sober now after four stints in rehab, told a judge Sheen had put her in fear of her life after his vitriolic tweeting.
It is believed the actress, who struggled with susbstance abuse in the past, begged a judge for custody after current carer Denise Richards 'turned her boys against her'.
Radar reports Richards, who has two daughters with Sheen, wrote a letter to the court detailing alleged behavioural problems and mood swings of her 4-year-old twins Bob and Max.

According to the letter, submitted to the child dependency court in Los Angeles, Brooke alleges Denise is turning the boys against her after a supervised visit where they wouldn't meet her eye or play with their toys.
Brooke, who claims to be seven months clean, wanted the children to live with her mother Moire Fiore but a judge turned her appeal.
Yesterday Sheen tweeted Brooke a picture of a cake with a grenade in it, calling for her to 'blow this candle out' after her restraining order was rejected.
Two And A Half Men star Sheen, 48, took to Twitter after Mueller lost her bid to stop him from coming near her and told his ex-wife of three years: ' Nice try this morning Brooke. You are a chubby weirdo, who will lose at every turn trying to get between me and my boys.'
Since splitting the pair have become embroiled in a bitter custody battle over their 4-year-old twins Bob and Max. Sheen has repeatedly accused his ex, who has struggled with substance abuse, of putting the children in danger.

Kansas State hands No. 23 Texas Tech its third consecutive loss
LUBBOCK, Texas - Jake Waters and Daniel Sams each ran for two touchdowns and Waters passed for another score to lead Kansas State over No. 23 Texas Tech 49-26 on Saturday.
Sams' TDs came on a 1-yard rush and a 5-yarder, and Waters scored from 1 yard and 13 yards.

Waters threw a 20-yard touchdown to Tramaine Thompson. John Hubert, who scored on a 63-yard run early in the game, finished with 157 yards on 23 carries to lead the Wildcats.

'Thor: The Dark World' star Kat Dennings endured own hero's journey to make film

Kat Dennings says she enjoys her role in the band for 'Thor: The Dark World' - that of the plucky comic relief.
'2 Broke Girls' star Kat Dennings doesn't get a super hero costume in her second foray into the super hero movie business.
The 27-year-old actress never got the chance to be kissed by Chris Hemsworth in 'Thor: The Dark World,' which opens Friday.

Her character, Darcy, the intern to Natalie Portman's Dr. Jane Foster, never even got promoted from comic relief to her own action star moment.
'I did get to do some action, I got kind of bruised up,' Dennings protests to the News at the film's London junket. 'But when I dove behind something, I am kind of pissed because you couldn't see me hit the ground. I did it so many time that I had bruises. You don't see me hit the street on film, I really did it, just so everybody knows.'

In fact, her biggest stunt may have been filming both the Marvel movie and her hit CBS sitcom at the same time on separate continents over a span of six months.
'What would happen is I would shoot three weeks, three episodes of the show and then we'd have a fourth week off,' she says. 'We'd finish shooting on a Tuesday night and I'd fly out Wednesday morning, I'd work seven days in London and then I'd fly home on the next Tuesday night and I'd be back at work on '2 Broke Girls' on Wednesday morning again.'

'Even when I was nauseous and had the flu and was jet-lagged, I knew it would be worth it when I saw the movie,' says Dennings.

Aside from jump starting her movie career into a whole different stratosphere, the 'Thor' movies have also given her the chance to impress one of the most important critics: her older brother, Geoffrey, a lifelong comic geek.
'He made me say all the names of his action figures,' says Dennings. 'So I had to memorize all of the names of the action figures, and once I did it, I was allowed in his room after that. He had like a hundred of them, but I did it.'
Just because she's nabbed a recurring role in a blockbuster super hero film franchise, doesn't mean she's ready to quit her day job - waitressing.
'I signed the old six-year contract on '2 Broke Girls' and we're in season three right now,' she says. 'But I really need that movie balance to survive in life.'
