Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been cleared by team doctors to return to the field, and he will start Sunday against the Detroit Lions, coach Marc Trestman announced Thursday.
Cutler was injured Oct. 20 against the Washington Redskins but missed only one full game because of Chicago's bye week. The team had initially figured Cutler would be sidelined at least four weeks, but he recovered more quickly than expected.
WEEK 10 PICKS: Anyone got Bears?
Trestman said he couldn't remember a player coming back from such an injury as quickly as Cutler did.
'He's been cleared to play, and if he couldn't do everything a QB asked to do on an NFL Sunday, he wouldn't be out there,' Trestman said.
The Bears beat the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, led by 34-year-old journeyman backup Josh McCown. He threw two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win at Lambeau Field.
Cutler's return comes at a crucial time for the Bears, who are in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC North with Detroit and Green Bay.
