Search-engine giant Google ended some of the mystery over its floating structures in Portland and San Francisco on Wednesday, when it disclosed that they may be used as interactive spaces to showcase new technology.
In a statement to the press, Google did not provide many details, but a CNN Tech affiliate in San Francisco reported the barge would be a floating showroom for Google Glass, the company's Web-connected eyewear, according to the Portland Press Herald. The station KPIX-TV in San Francisco reported the structures on the barges will be part of a small fleet of luxury event spaces that could be transported by barge or train to various locations.
Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO of Cianbro Corp., told the paper earlier that he could not disclose details about the barge project his company is working on in Portland Harbor, but said the work involved outfitting the building with 'a substantial amount of technology.'
In order to operate such a learning center in San Francisco Bay, the paper reported the company would eventually need permission from the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission. Portland Mayor Michael Brennan told the paper Wednesday he's unaware of the company contacting the city about operating an interactive learning center on the city's waterfront.
Documents obtained by the New London, Conn.-based paper detailed plans to operate the vessel in various ports, starting with New York Harbor.
