She's previously admitted that her latest album was recorded under the influence of marijuana.

But while her candid admission is no surprise to fans of the outlandish star, Lady Gaga says her use of the drug turned into outright dependency after she suffered a debilitating hip injury.

The 28-year-old singer was wheelchair bound after undergoing surgery last February to treat the damage caused to her cartilage - the result of rigorous nightly performances during her Born This Way world tour.

Having cancelled her remaining 25 shows, a recovering Gaga threw herself into writing and recording third album ARTPOP - scheduled for release on Monday.

But she freely admits she also threw herself into habitual pot smoking in a bid to alleviate the excruciating pain she was left in while performing night after night.

'I was just numbing, numbing, numbing myself then sleeping it off, then getting on stage, killing it in pain, then getting off and smoking, smoking, smoking, not knowing what pain was,' she told The Sun.

'F**k, if I know what hurts the most, you know? I would break the habit and it would sneak back in and I would break it and sneak back in.'

The Applause singer also feels her early experiences as a struggling artist contributed to her elevated drug use.

'Yeah, it's trauma,' she said. 'I went through terrible experiences early in my career climbing through swine and swine of men in the music industry - just trying to get somebody to listen to my music and take me seriously as a songwriter instead of trying to get me to b*** them' she said.

In an interview with October issue of Elle, Gaga opened up about her reliance on marijuana while she was recording her latest album - which has received tepid reviews ahead of its November 11 release date.

'I was less drunk and more high on this record. If that makes sense,' she explained.

Her admission follows a string of high-profile drug boasts, amongst them a very public declaration of love for marijuana during a concert in Amsterdam last September.

Performing at the city's Ziggo Dome during the European leg of her mammoth Born This Way tour, Gaga prompted stunned reactions from those in attendance when she appeared to light up a long joint.

'Holland, is it real?' she asked the packed audience. 'Don't tease me now. We just want to make sure if it's real.'

After several puffs she threw it into the crowd, adding: 'And for those of you who are wondering if I'm high right now, I'm not. That is not nearly enough to get me high.'
